Luke Watson, now better known as “puke” Watson, has had his few minutes of fame for his comment of the urge to puke on the Springbok jersey when representing the rugby Springboks. He contends this is a painful reminder of the apartheid past and brings about dissension.
He also refuses to play for the national side while that emblem remains on the jersey.
A few corrections seem to be in order. The Springbok emblem was on the jersey alongside the national flower from the earliest memory of the Springboks and numerous famous persons of colour have played in that same jersey. No mention of long held hurts were ever mentioned. Watson also plays for the Western Province who have the Disa as an emblem even though it was on the jersey in the apartheid era and blacks were not allowed to represent WP yet Mr Watson happily dons this jersey week after week. I fear a bit if the hypocrite is to be noted in Mr Watson’s apparent aversion to the Springbok jersey or is it a ploy as he has become aware that he is not able to earn the jersey as the only time he has worn it waqs with political infighting from his father, Mr Cheeky Watson. On merits alone Luke Watson would never don the Springbok jersey so what is all the Boo Ha about.
For me it is because of his outspoken Christian viewpoints which he claims forces him to “fight” for these rights. Luke, I have not read anywhere of Jesus fighting for any political rights in a time of mass slavery and injustice. Feel free to continue your fight but then please don;t sully the name of Jesus in doing so. He stood for justice yes, but not through violence. He stood for the downtrodden yes, but not by being a reactionary but instead by coming in an opposite spirit of love and understanding. Now I understand that you could be under the influence of your Father and his hurts of the past but consider what you say and do when it is done in His name.
