Shiver Relief

19 02 2007

Shiver ReliefShiver Relief was originated by Duard Le Roux when driving to work in the early morning and seeing all these casual labourers being picked up from the side of the road and bundled into the back of an open truck. He could feel the chill as they drove to their workplace without food or heat in the cold Highveld winter.

Shiver relief has become a movement of people supplying the funding for purchase of blankets, Beanies and warm gloves which is then handed out to the people. We hand it out in the evenings when they return from the places of work and gather in the informal shacks or simply cardboard “rugs” which are the sleeping places in the open field. All funds go directly into Shiver Relief as there are no admin costs as everything is done on a volunteer basis.

We use young school kids to do the handing out of woolen caps and blankets.
We have now gone a step further where we are collecting wool and knitting needles which we give to the ladies of our mission area, Dindela, and train them to knit warm clothing like caps, scarves and blankets. This works well as we provide them with the material and pay them a minimal amount for the finished product. This has created work in a place with 78% unemployment and pride of function among these ladies.

We invite all to become part of the Shiver Relief team in assisting financially, to become involved in the distribution, become involved in the knitting of goods and/or supplying materials (Wool and knitting needles) , assist with the training of the Dindela ladies praying for the Shiver Relief effort and the seeds planted.
